With justice for All
For this project I did not have a presentation. I was on the event planning committee so I helped plan the event as well as coordinate booths, volunteers, and food. I created volunteer sign-up sheets, I talked to parents about food. i communicated with Nyana on what I needed to do in order to help her with booth's. Then I would help others with their projects if they needed it and I would help them get the supplies they needed.
We began this project by studying Dr. King’s ideas of Civil Disobedience We later studied various moral and political philosophies of justice that have influenced our legal system these philosophies, Deontology, Utilitarianism, John Rawls’ and Libertarianism. When we started our project we researched various issues of injustice in the Durango community and heard from community organizations about the issues they are working on from homelessness to immigration to environmental issues. We researched these issues further and then voted on Homelessness as our project. We researched homelessness further, hearing from various community organizations who work on this issue. We then took a field trip with Ed Aber to the Test Tracks. We then worked together and defined the problem and the goal of our event. After all of our research and field trips we planned our event and we created our projects that achieved our goal! As well as made an impression on the community that will last for a long time.
Our Event was a community gathering at the Fairgrounds, we had keynote speakers, student presentations that were in the form of films, models, and art. Then in the end we put on a big dinner for the community, the dinner was supported by parents donating crock-pots of food as well as food organizations donating appetizers. In the beginning of the event I was very stressed, I didn't know how it was going to go or how people were going to take it, I thought something was going to go wrong and I was worried. Towards the end I was ensured with hope, as I walked around during the dinner talking to people, asking them how their night was, and hearing them all say that it was very impressive and that we were actually making a difference and we were brave for taking this step. Hearing that more than once is definitely going to stick with me because I actually cared about this project and I cared about the homeless community and I wanted to make a difference. I walked away from that building that night feeling like I helped make a change, and I was proud of myself.
I don't really think I went out of comfort zone in the preparation process of the project but during the event while I was going up to strangers and having intellectual conversations with them, it was definitely different for me. Towards the end I kind of had a solo job on the event planning committee but I did work with Emery on figuring out food, and volunteers, I also worked with Nyana on booth’s for organizations, and I basically just helped with whatever was needed.
I feel like this project overall helped me understand that I can achieve anything as long as I put my mind to it. All I have to do is communicate what I want effectively, work with others to reach the goal and be professional so you can make a good long lasting first expression. As well as if you help others they can help you.
