Mi Dia De los Muertos Proyecto
When I first heard about this project I thought I would have a hard time learning the vocab for the project and finding out who I would celebrate. But once I got an understanding of the project everything just came easy. I decided to do my great grandmother Lula Belle Maslen Uptain. It was so cool to learn about her life and it made me feel good to celebrate her.
I loved how people were interested in learning about my great grandmother and it gave me a proud feeling talking about her. I thought that even though it was my first Spanish exhibition I did pretty good, I could have added a few more Mexican ofrenda decorations but it was ok. I thought it was really fun and I would gladly do the exhibition again. Dia de los Muertos is a festival where people can celebrate the dead. During the Day of the dead festival there is bread, flowers, candles, and things that they liked when they were alive, such as food, flowers, and items they enjoyed. The day of the Dead was not celebrated all over mexico, northern mexico started celebrating this holiday in the 20th century, and southern mexico didn't start celebrating until the early 21st century. The point of the holiday is to guide our ancestors on their spiritual journey. In the 1960s the Mexican government made the Dia de los muertos holiday an official holiday and it is celebrated on November 1st & 2nd.

“Family is like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions yet our roots remain as one” Mi Dia de los Muertos proyecto
-For my Dia de los Muertos proyecto I choose my great-grandmother Lula belle Maslen Uptain. In order to find out about this person I called up my grandmother. She told me about her siblings, and how her brother hit her in the side of the head with a broomstick, and she had a gray streak in her hair for the rest of her life. She also talked about how my great-grandmother tried growing a white rose bush ever since she moved to Lewis, Colorado. But she was never able to get it to bloom. After she died my grandma planted a white rose bush on her grave, and it grew for many years until the grounds keeper cut it down. That is why I had white roses on my ofrenda. I also had a hat on my ofrenda, it was one of my great-grandmothers many hats. I always wanted to learn more about my great-grandmother because everything that I heard about her made her sound like an outstanding woman, and she really was. |
